Define the commercial brief
A private-label brief should identify the product, intended market, target consumer, pack format, expected volume and launch timing. Include any mandatory ingredient, allergen, certification or label requirements.
A reference product can communicate direction, but it does not replace a written brief or confirmed legal requirements.
Choose the development level
An existing-formula private label uses an available product with customer branding or an approved pack change. A customized project may involve changes to flavor, ingredients, size or processing and usually requires more evaluation.
The supplier should state which route is feasible and which points remain subject to factory review.
Confirm packaging before final costing
Bottle, jar, pouch, bag and foodservice packs have different material minimums, filling lines, carton designs and artwork requirements. Final landed cost cannot be compared accurately without a defined pack basis.
Use existing compatible packaging when low launch volume is important. Fully custom components may require higher minimums and longer lead times.
Manage samples and artwork as controlled approvals
Set separate approvals for product sample, specification, packaging structure, artwork and pre-production output. Record who approved each version.
Label copy should be based on confirmed product information and destination requirements. Do not print around unresolved ingredients, allergens or mandatory declarations.
Prepare production and repeat-order controls
Before production, confirm the approved specification, artwork files, coding format, carton marks, quantity tolerances and inspection plan.
For repeat orders, preserve version history and document any factory, ingredient, pack or label change before production begins.
